Youyan of the Song lived at Chongshan Temple on Chicheng in Taizhou. He relied on Shenzhao to study the Tiantai teachings. In his later years, he tied a thatch hut beneath a crabapple tree and styled it Zha'an. Throughout his life, he earnestly cultivated pure karma. He had poems titled "Yearning for the Homeland of Peaceful Nourishment," which were widely circulated at the time. In the summer, fourth month, of the first year of the Jianzhong Jingguo reign era, when he was about to reach his end, he saw a great lotus flower in a jeweled pond, with heavenly music arranged on four sides. He then composed a poem farewell to returning to the Pure Land to show the assembly. Seven days later, he crossed his legs and transformed. Above his stūpa there was light like the moon, which only disappeared after three nights.
