Xiongjun of the Tang dynasty resided in Chengdu. His bravery surpassed others, and he did not observe the precepts. He once abandoned the monastic life to join the army, but soon became a monk again. Because he heard a sūtra saying that reciting the Buddha's name a single time eradicates the heavy karmic retribution of saṃsāra for eighty billion kalpas, he rejoiced greatly and said, "I rely solely on this!" From then on, although he committed evil deeds, he practiced buddhamanasikāra without stopping. In the second month of the dingwei year, he died suddenly. After a night, he suddenly revived and said he had reached the nether administration, where the magistrate said, "You were arrested by mistake. However, your practice of buddhamanasikāra originally lacked deep faith; now that you are returning to the human world, you should double your diligence." People thought he had slipped through the net of hell. Soon after, he entered the mountains, observed the dietary precepts, and practiced buddhamanasikāra. After four years, in the third month of the xinhai year, monks gathered, and he announced to them, "My time has come. Return to the city, see my relatives and acquaintances, and tell them on my behalf: 'Jun has attained rebirth in the Pure Land through buddhamanasikāra; do not consider him one who merely slipped through the net of hell.'" In the midst of talking and laughing, he sat upright and transformed.
