In the Great Ming, Sun Shuzi, Dharma name Dayu, was alert, sharp, upright, and resolute from childhood. At age twelve, following his father Layman Jingwu, he presented an image of Amitābha of the Forty-eight Vows and entered Yunqi, receiving the five precepts. Upon returning, he severed meat and blood, ceased social visits, abandoned rote recitation of worldly texts, set his resolve on buddhamanasikāra, and vowed to attain the golden pedestal, exerting himself diligently without sparing his body or life. Soon he saw two bhikṣus holding lotuses to give seal of approval to his single-minded devotion to the Pure Land. Again he saw a transformed person reciting the Diamond Sūtra for a whole day and night. Thereupon he sat up with a start and said: 'Amitābha and Avalokiteśvara have both come to welcome me.' Forming the vajramuṣṭi seal, he called out Amitābha's name loudly several times, and then peacefully passed away. The time was the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the xinhai year of the Wanli era [1611]. His 'Song of the Twelve Hours of the Pure Land' is transmitted to the world, recounted in detail in Senior Compiler Wu's *Biography of Xisheng*.
