Yuan Zicai of the Tang dynasty resided at Guanyin Monastery in Runzhou, reciting the Amitābha Sūtra and practicing buddhamanasikāra. Suddenly contracting a minor illness, at night he heard fragrance and musical sounds in the air. As if someone spoke, 'The crude music has already passed; the subtle music follows next. Sir, you ought to depart.' He passed away performing buddhamanasikāra. The extraordinary fragrance did not dissipate for several days.
