Chan Master Changlu Ze, following the bequeathed model of the ancestral master Huiyuan, established the Lotus Excellent Gathering to universally encourage buddhamanasikāra. One night he dreamed of a person wearing a black headscarf and white robe, whose appearance was clear and graceful; bowing, the person said, 'I wish to enter your Lotus Excellent Gathering; please inscribe my name.' Ze asked, 'What is your name?' The person replied, 'Puhui (Samantaprabha).' Having written it, the person said again, 'My elder brother Puxian (Samantabhadra) also begs to be inscribed together with me.' When Ze awoke, he checked the 'Detachment from the World' Chapter of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra and found the names of the two bodhisattvas; he thereupon made them the heads of the society.
