The abbot of Shion'in at the foot of Mount Kasuga, Nyōenbō Chōkai, was requested to append kana glosses and indicate surnames. These kana and surname endorsements were recorded by the Tsuchimikado Great Counselor who entered the novitiate (Lord Akitada). Copying directly from that lay-monk's own brush-annotated exemplar, it may be regarded as a peerless authoritative text.
