Upādhyāya Xishan of Suzhou. A monk asked: “Not asking about the three vehicles and twelve divisions of teaching, what is the exact intention of the ancestral master coming from the west?” The master held up his whisk to show him. The monk did not bow, but went to visit Xuefeng. Xuefeng asked: “Where have you come from?” The monk said: “I have come from Zhejiang.” Xuefeng said: “Where were you this summer?” He said: “At Xichan in Suzhou.” Xuefeng said: “Is the Upādhyāya well?” He said: “He was in myriad blessings when I left.” Xuefeng said: “Why didn't you stay leisurely?” He said: “The Buddha-Dharma was not clear.” Xuefeng said: “What happened?” The monk recounted the previous conversation. Xuefeng said: “Why didn't you accept it?” The monk said: “It was an objective realm.” Xuefeng said: “Do you see the men and women of households in the city of Suzhou?” He said: “I see them.” Xuefeng said: “Do you see the trees and forests on the road?” He said: “I see them.” Xuefeng said: “Whenever you look upon the men and women of households, the great earth, forests, and ponds, all are objective realms. Do you accept them?” He said: “I accept them.” Xuefeng said: “Just as when he held up the whisk—why didn't you accept it?” The monk then bowed and said: “I spoke carelessly; I beg the master for compassion.” Xuefeng said: “The entire universe is a single eye; where will you crouch down?” The monk had no words.
Grand Master Lu Gen, the prefect of Xuanzhou, had earlier asked Nanquan: “An ancient raised a goose in a bottle. As the goose gradually grew larger, it could not get out of the bottle. Now, one must not break the bottle, nor harm the goose. Upādhyāya, how would you get it out?” Nanquan called out: “Grand Master!” Lu answered. Nanquan said: “It is out!” Lu from this was awakened. When Nanquan passed away, the prior asked: “Why doesn't the Grand Master weep for the late teacher?” Lu said: “If the prior can speak a word, I will weep.” The prior had no answer. (Changqing spoke in his place: “Should one weep or should one not weep?”)
