10.54

襄州關南道常禪師僧問。如何是西來意。師舉柱杖云。會麼。僧云。不會。師乃喝出。僧問。如何是大道之源。師與一拳。師每見僧來參禮。多以拄杖打趁。或云。遲一刻。或云。打動關南鼓。而時輩鮮有唱和者。

Chan Master Daochang of Guannan in Xiangzhou. A monk asked: “What is the intention of coming from the west?” The master held up his staff and said: “Do you understand?” The monk said: “I do not understand.” The master then shouted him out. A monk asked: “What is the source of the Great Way?” The master gave him a punch. Whenever the master saw monks coming to pay respects, he mostly drove them off with strikes of his staff, or said: “You're late by a moment,” or said: “The Guannan drum is struck!” Yet among his contemporaries, few could match him.
