Chan Master Jianzong of Mount Jing in Hangzhou was a man of Changcheng in Huzhou whose secular surname was Qian. He went forth under the venerable Gaoxian of Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture, thoroughly studying the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa and Viśeṣacintabrahmaparipṛcchā Sūtras. Later he went to Yanguan to visit Great Master Wukong to resolve his doubts and hindrances. In the third year of the Xiantong era of the Tang, he stayed at Mount Jing to propagate the Chan teaching. He had a junior disciple, Hongyin, who prided himself on lecturing and debate (Yin was the third-generation Great Master Faji of Mount Jing). The master said to him: “The correct Dharma of the Buddhas and ancestors is direct and cuts off verbal explanation. What benefit to the principle is your counting grains of sand in the ocean? If you simply harbor no views, extinguish external conditions, and leave all minds behind, that is your true nature.” When Yin heard this, he was bewildered; taking his leave, he traveled on pilgrimage and reached Guishan, where he finally awakened to the profound meaning and became Guishan's disciple. The master passed away on the fifth day of the intercalary third month in the seventh year of the Xiantong era (a bingxu year). He was posthumously named Great Master Wushang, being the second generation of Mount Jing.
