Chan Master Jieling (written as ‘Xu’ in the catalogue) of Shanglin in Hunan first visited Guishan. [Guishan] said, “O virtuous one, what have you come doing?” The Master said, “Fully clad in armor and helmet.” Guishan said, “Take it all off and come meet with this virtuous one!” The Master said, “I have taken it off.” Guishan scolded, “The thieves have not yet been struck; why have you taken it off?” The Master had no reply. Yangshan spoke in his place: “I request the Upādhyāya to dismiss your attendants.” Guishan cupped his hands in greeting and said, “Yes, yes.” Later, when the Master visited Yongtai, he finally understood its purport.
