Upādhyāya Mimoyan of Mount Wutai always held a wooden fork. Whenever he saw a monk come to bow, he would fork him by the neck and say, “Which demon or spirit taught you to leave home? Which demon or spirit taught you to go on pilgrimage? Speak, and you die under the fork! Cannot speak, and you die under the fork! Speak quickly!” Few student monks could reply. (Fayan spoke in place: “Begging for my life!” Fadeng spoke in place: [He] simply stretches out his neck and shows it to him. Xuanjue spoke in place: “Old fellow, you may put down the fork.”)
