11.19

福州九峯慈慧禪師。初在溈山遇祐師上堂云。汝等諸人只得大體不得大用。師抽身出去。溈山召之。師更不迴顧。溈山云。此子堪為法器。師一日辭溈山入嶺云。某甲辭違和尚。千里之外不離左右。溈山動容曰。善為。

Chan Master Cihui of Jiufeng in Fuzhou. Initially, while at Guishan, he encountered Master Lingyou ascending the hall and saying: “All of you merely attain the great essence, but do not attain the great functioning.”
The Master withdrew and walked out. Guishan called to him, but the Master did not even look back.
Guishan said: “This vessel is fit for the Dharma.”
One day, the Master took leave of Guishan to enter the mountains, saying: “I take my leave of the Upādhyāya. Though a thousand miles away, I shall not depart from your side.”
Guishan, visibly moved, said: “Take good care of yourself.”
