11.33

洪州武寧縣新興嚴陽尊者。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。土塊。曰如何是法。師曰。地動也。曰如何是僧。師曰。喫粥喫飯。僧問。如何是新興水。師曰。前面江裏。僧問。如何是應物現形。師曰。與我拈床子過來。師常有一蛇一虎。隨從左右手中與食。

The Venerable Yanyang of Xinxing in Wuning County, Hongzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "A clod of earth." [The monk] asked, "What is the Dharma?" The Master said, "The earth moves." [The monk] asked, "What is the Sangha?" The Master said, "Eating gruel and eating rice." A monk asked, "What is the water of Xinxing?" The Master said, "In the river out front." A monk asked, "What is responding to things by manifesting forms?" The Master said, "Bring the meditation bench over to me." The Master always had a snake and a tiger following by his side, feeding them from his own hands.
