Chan Master Huijue of the Guangxiao Cloister east of the city of Yangzhou. A monk asked, "When the flower of awakening has just blossomed, it fills the Sahā world. When the ancestral seal came from the West, what matter ought to be discussed?" The Master said, "Feelings arise, and wisdom is blocked." [The monk] said, "This is the meaning of the teachings." The Master said, "What clothing are you wearing?" [A monk] asked, "When empty space is shattered with a single blow of the staff, what then?" The Master said, "When tired, rest." The Master asked Song Qiqiu, "Do you understand the Way?" Song said, "Even the Way cannot be accommodated." The Master said, "Is there accommodating or no accommodating?" Song said, "It is not like that at all." The Master said, "That which cannot be accommodated!" Song had no reply. The Master led the congregation out; seeing an open pillar, the Master joined his palms and said, "Greetings, World-Honoured One." A monk said, "Upādhyāya, that is an open pillar." The Master said, "Weeping until blood flows is of no use; better to keep one's mouth shut and let the remaining spring pass." A monk asked, "Coming from afar to turn to the Master, what is the Master's intention?" [The Master] said, "The authorities are strict and do not permit putting [you] up." [The monk] said, "Does the Master not have skillful means?" The Master said, "Stay overnight in the furnace shed for now." Upāsaka Zhang asked, "What can be done about old age?" The Master said, "How old are you?" Zhang said, "Eighty." The Master said, "That may indeed be called old." [Zhang] said, "What is it ultimately?" The Master said, "Even straight up to a thousand years, it has not stopped." Someone asked, "In my life I love to slaughter oxen. Is there any sin?" The Master said, "No sin." [The person] said, "Why is there no sin?" The Master said, "Kill one, repay one."
