11.38

婺州新建禪師不度小師。有僧問。和尚年老何不畜一童子侍奉。師曰。有瞽聵者為吾討來。僧辭。師問。什麼處去。僧曰。府下開元寺去。師曰。我有一信附與了。寺主汝將得去否。僧曰。便請。師曰。想汝也不奈何。

Chan Master Xinjian of Wuzhou did not ordain novice disciples. A monk asked, "The Upādhyāya is advanced in years; why not keep a boy to attend upon you?" The Master said, "Find someone blind and deaf for me." The monk took his leave. The Master asked, "Where are you going?" The monk said, "To the Kaiyuan Monastery in the prefectural seat." The Master said, "I have a letter to entrust to the monastery director; can you take it?" The monk said, "Please do." The Master said, "I imagine you cannot manage it either."
