11.40

益州西睦和尚上堂。有一俗士舉手云。和尚便是一頭驢。師曰。老僧被汝騎。彼無語去。後三日再來自言。某甲三日前著賊。師拈拄杖趁出。師有時驀喚侍者。侍者應諾。師曰。更深夜靜共伊商量。

Upādhyāya Ximu of Yizhou ascended the hall. A layman raised his hand and said, "The Upādhyāya is just a donkey." The Master said, "This old monk is ridden by you." That man went away without words. Three days later he came again and said of himself, "Three days ago I was caught by a thief." The Master took up his staff and drove him out. The Master would sometimes suddenly call his attendant. The attendant would respond. The Master would say, "Late at night when it is quiet, discuss it with him."
