12.24

鎮州三聖院慧然禪師。自臨濟受訣。遍歷叢林至仰山。仰山問。汝名什麼。師曰。名慧寂。仰山曰。慧寂是我名。師曰。我名慧然。仰山大笑而已。師到香嚴。嚴問。什麼處來。師曰。臨濟來。嚴曰。將得臨濟劍來麼。師以坐具驀口打而去。師到德山才展坐具。德山云。莫展炊巾遮裏無𮩋飯。師曰。縱有也無著處。德山以拄杖打師。師接住却推德山向禪床上。德山大笑。師哭蒼天而去。師在雪峯聞峯垂語云。人人盡有一面古鏡。遮箇獼猴亦有一面古鏡。師出問。歷劫無名。和尚為什麼立（一作彰）為古鏡。峯云。瑕生也。師咄曰。遮老和尚話頭也不識。峯云。罪過老僧住持事多。師見寶壽和尚開堂。師推出一僧在寶壽前。寶壽便打其僧。師曰。長老若恁麼為人。瞎却鎮州一城人眼在（法眼云。什麼是瞎却人眼處）。

Chan Master Huiran of Sansheng Cloister in Zhenzhou. Having received the secret instructions from Linji, he traveled throughout the monasteries and reached Yangshan. Yangshan asked, 'What is your name?' The master said, 'My name is Huiji.' Yangshan said, 'Huiji is my name.' The master said, 'My name is Huiran.' Yangshan simply laughed heartily. The master arrived at Xiangyan's place. Xiangyan asked, 'Where have you come from?' The master said, 'I have come from Linji.' Xiangyan said, 'Have you brought Linji's sword?' The master struck him across the mouth with his sitting cloth and walked away. The master arrived at Deshan's place; just as he spread his sitting cloth, Deshan said, 'Do not spread your napkin; there is no leftover rice here.' The master said, 'Even if there were, there would be no place to put it.' Deshan struck the master with his staff. The master caught it and pushed Deshan onto the meditation couch. Deshan laughed heartily. The master cried, 'Blue Heaven!' and walked away. While at Xuefeng's place, the master heard Xuefeng give the instruction, 'Everyone has an ancient mirror. This macaque also has an ancient mirror.' The master stepped forward and asked, 'Nameless across kalpas, why do you establish it as an ancient mirror?' Xuefeng said, 'A flaw has arisen.' The master scolded, 'This old upādhyāya does not even recognize the topic of talk!' Xuefeng said, 'My fault; this old monk has too many affairs as abbot.' The master saw Upādhyāya Baoshou inaugurate a hall. The master pushed forward a monk in front of Baoshou. Baoshou immediately struck the monk. The master said, 'If the elder acts for people like this, he will blind the eyes of the entire city of Zhenzhou!' (Fayan said, 'Where is the blinding of people's eyes?')
