12.25

魏府大覺禪師。興化存獎禪師為院宰時。師一日問曰。我常聞汝道向南行一迴。拄杖頭未曾撥著箇會佛法底人。汝憑什麼道理有此語。興化乃喝。師便打。興化又喝。師又打。來日興化從法堂過。師召曰。院主。我直下疑汝昨日行底喝。與我說來。興化曰。存獎平生於三聖處學得底。盡被和尚折倒了也。願與存獎箇安樂法門。師曰。遮瞎驢來遮裏納敗缺卸却衲帔待痛決一頓。興化即於語下領旨。雖同嗣臨濟。而常以師為助發之友。師臨終時謂眾曰。我有一隻箭要付與人。時有一僧出云。請和尚箭。師云。汝喚什麼作箭。僧喝。師打數下。自歸方丈却喚其僧入來。問云。汝適來會麼。僧云。不會。師又打數下。擲却拄杖云已。後遇明眼人分。明舉似。便乃告寂。

Chan Master Dajue of Weifu. When Chan Master Xinghua Cunjiang was serving as director of the monastery, the Master asked him one day, "I have often heard it said that when you made a journey to the south, the tip of your staff never once touched someone who understood the Buddha Dharma. On what principle do you make this claim?" Xinghua gave a shout. The Master struck him. Xinghua shouted again. The Master struck him again. The next day, when Xinghua passed through the Dharma hall, the Master called out, "Director! I have continuous doubts about the shout you gave yesterday; explain it to me." Xinghua said, "Everything Cunjiang learned at Sansheng's place in his whole life has been entirely broken down by the Upādhyāya. I pray you grant Cunjiang a Dharma-gate of peace and joy." The Master said, "This blind donkey has come here to admit defeat; take off your patched robe and wait for a thorough beating!" Xinghua grasped the meaning right at these words. Although both were dharma heirs of Linji, he always regarded the Master as a friend who helped stimulate his realization. When the Master was about to pass away, he said to the assembly, "I have an arrow that I want to confer on someone." At that time, a monk came forward and said, "Please give the Upādhyāya's arrow." The Master said, "What do you call an arrow?" The monk shouted. The Master struck him several times, returned to the abbot's quarters, and then called that monk to come inside. He asked, "Did you understand just now?" The monk said, "I did not understand." The Master struck him several times more, threw down his staff, said, "Later on, when you meet someone with clear eyes, bring this up clearly to them," and thereupon passed away.
