12.30

桐峯菴主僧問。和尚遙裏忽遇大蟲作麼生。師作吼聲。僧作怖勢。師大笑。僧曰。遮老賊。師曰。爭柰老僧何。有僧到菴前便去。師曰。闍梨闍梨。僧迴首便喝。師良久。僧曰。死却遮老漢。師乃打之。僧無語。師呵呵大笑。有僧入菴把住師。師曰。殺人殺人。其僧推開曰。叫作麼。師曰誰。僧乃喝。師打之。僧出迴首曰。且待且待。師大笑。

The Hermit of Tongfeng. A monk asked, "If you suddenly encounter a tiger out in the distance, what will you do?" The Master made a roaring sound. The monk made a frightened gesture. The Master laughed loudly. The monk said, "This old thief!" The Master said, "What can you do about this old monk?" A monk came in front of the hermitage and was about to leave. The Master said, "Ācārya! Ācārya!" The monk turned his head and gave a shout. The Master remained silent for a long time. The monk said, "This old fellow has died!" The Master then struck him. The monk had nothing to say. The Master chuckled and laughed loudly. A monk entered the hermitage and grabbed hold of the Master. The Master said, "Murder! Murder!" That monk pushed him away and said, "What are you shouting for?" The Master said, "Who is it?" The monk shouted. The Master struck him. As the monk walked out, he turned his head and said, "Just wait! Just wait!" The Master laughed loudly.
