12.31

杉洋菴主。有僧到參。師問。阿誰。曰杉注菴主。師曰。是我。僧便喝。師作噓聲。僧曰。猶要棒在。師便打。僧問。菴主得什麼道理後住此山。師曰。也欲通箇來由。又恐遭人點檢。僧曰。又爭免得。師乃喝之。僧曰。恰是。師乃打。其僧大笑而出。師曰。今日大敗大敗。

The Hermit of Shanyang. A monk came to visit. The Master asked, "Who is it?" The monk said, "The hermit of Shanzhu." The Master said, "It is me." The monk gave a shout. The Master made a hissing sound. The monk said, "Still in need of the staff!" The Master struck him. A monk asked, "What principle did the hermit obtain before dwelling on this mountain?" The Master said, "I too wish to reveal a reason, but I fear being scrutinized by others." The monk said, "How can you avoid it?" The Master gave a shout. The monk said, "Just so!" The Master struck him. That monk laughed loudly and went out. The Master said, "Today a great defeat, a great defeat!"
