Chan Master Bajiaoshan Huiqing of Yingzhou was a man of Silla. A monk asked, "What is Bajiao water?" The master said, "Warm in winter, cool in summer." The monk asked, "What is the hair-severing sword?" The master said, "Step forward three paces." The monk said, "What about one who uses it?" The master said, "Step back three paces." The monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's single sentence to instruct people?" The master said, "I only fear the ācārya does not ask." The master ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying, "Do you understand? Those who know one another are few. Take care!" A monk asked, "When there is a question without speech, how is it?" The master said, "Before leaving the three gates, a journey of a thousand leagues." The monk asked, "What is oneself?" The master said, "Facing south, look at the Northern Dipper." The monk asked, "When light and objects are both extinguished, what is it again?" The master said, "Knowing." The monk said, "Knowing what?" The master said, "The ninth son of Jianzhou." The monk asked, "What is the school of Deva [Āryadeva]?" The master said, "The red banner is on the left." The master asked a monk, "Where have you recently left?" The monk said, "Please test and say, Master." The master said, "I took you for a merchant aboard a ship, but you turned out to be a petty peddler of this prefecture." A monk asked, "Not asking about two heads and three visages, I request the master directly to point out the original face." The master sat upright in silence. A monk asked, "When a thief comes, one must strike; when a guest comes, one must look after him. If suddenly guest and thief arrive together, how is it?" The master said, "Inside the room there is a pair of torn straw sandals." The monk said, "Just as with torn straw sandals, are they still fit for use?" The master said, "If you take them away, the start will be ominous and the end unlucky." A monk asked, "What is the meaning of hiding one's body in the Northern Dipper?" The master said, "Nine times nine is eighty-one." The master added, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The master said, "One, two, three, four, five." The monk asked, "How was it before the ancient Buddhas appeared in the world?" The master said, "A thousand-year-old eggplant root." The monk said, "How was it after they appeared in the world?" The master said, "Vajra glares with bulging eyes." The master ascended the hall, and after a long silence said, "This has been an immense disgrace to one another. Take care!"
