Chan Master Zifu Zhensui of Ji Prefecture (residing as the second generation). A monk asked, "When the Master saw the ancients, what intention did you attain to then desist?"
The Master drew a circular figure and showed it to him.
[The monk] asked, "What is the song of the ancients?"
The Master drew a circular figure and showed it to him.
[The monk] asked, "What is the very first phrase?"
The Master said, "Before the world had fully formed, you, Ācārya, were also here."
[The monk] asked, "What was Baizhang's meaning in rolling up the mat?"
The Master paused for a good while.
[The monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the ancient's saying, 'Three times three before, three times three behind'?"
The Master said, "What is your name?"
[The monk] said, "So-and-so."
The Master said, "Go drink some tea."
The Master addressed the assembly, saying, "Seeing the flagpole of Zifu across the river and turning back—the soles of your feet deserve thirty blows of the staff. How much more so when crossing the river to come here!"
At that moment a monk was just coming forward. The Master said, "Not worth talking to!"
[A monk] asked, "What is the mind of the ancient Buddhas?"
The Master said, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth."
