13.17

潭州鹿苑和尚。僧問。餘國作佛還有異名也無。師作圓相示之。問如何是鹿苑一路。師曰。吉嘹舌頭問將來。問如何是。閉門造車。師曰。南嶽石橋。僧曰。如何是出門合轍。師曰。拄杖頭鞋。師上堂展手云。天下老和尚諸上座命根總在遮裏。有一僧出曰。還收得也無。師曰。天台石橋側。僧曰某甲不恁麼。師曰。伏惟尚饗。問如何是世尊不說說。師曰。須彌山倒。曰如何是迦葉不聞聞。師曰。大海枯竭。

Upādhyāya Luoyuan of Tan Prefecture. A monk asked, "When becoming a Buddha in other realms, are there still different names or not?"
The Master drew a circular figure and showed it to him.
[The monk] asked, "What is the single road of Luoyuan?"
The Master said, "Stir your tongue and come ask!"
[The monk] asked, "What is 'building a cart behind closed doors'?"
The Master said, "The stone bridge of Nanyue."
The monk said, "What is 'going out the door to fit the ruts'?"
The Master said, "The shoes on the tip of the walking staff."
The Master took the high seat, spread out his hands, and said, "The life-roots of the venerable elders and all the sthaviras throughout the realm are entirely in here!"
A monk came forward and said, "Can they be gathered in, or not?"
The Master said, "Beside the stone bridge of Tiantai."
The monk said, "I am not like that."
The Master said, "I humbly hope you enjoy the offering."
[The monk] asked, "What is the World-Honoured One's speaking without speaking?"
The Master said, "Mount Sumeru topples."
[The monk] said, "What is Kāśyapa's hearing without hearing?"
The Master said, "The great ocean dries up."
