Chan Master Changzi Kuang of You County in Tanzhou initially went to Caoxi to pay homage to the Patriarch's stūpa. On his return, he visited Shitou. Shitou asked, "Where have you come from?" He said, "I have come from Lingnan." Shitou said, "Has the single venerable merit on the mountain ridge been accomplished or not?" The Master said, "It has been accomplished for a long time; it only lacks dotting the pupils." Shitou said, "Do you want the pupils dotted?" The Master said, "Please do so." Shitou then raised one foot. The Master bowed. Shitou said, "What principle did you see that you make a bow?" The Master said, "According to what I see, it is like a speck of snow on a great smelting furnace." (Xuanjue said: "Tell me, did Changzi's reply possess the eye or not possess the eye? If it possessed the eye, why did he ask the other to dot the pupils? If it did not possess the eye, why did he say, 'It has been accomplished for a long time'? Now, how do you deliberate this?" Fadeng said in his place: "The Upādhyāya might be called dim-sighted.")
