16.22

郢州芭蕉和尚。僧問。從上宗乘如何舉唱。師曰。已被冷眼人覷破了。問不落諸緣。請師直指。師曰。有問有答。問如何是和尚為人一句。師曰。只恐闍梨不問。

Upādhyāya Bajiao of Yingzhou. A monk asked, "How is the ancestral vehicle of old proclaimed?" The Master said, "It has already been seen through by a bystander with cold eyes." [The monk] asked, "Without falling into the various conditions, please, Master, point directly." The Master said, "There is a question and there is an answer." [The monk] asked, "What is the upādhyāya's one phrase for instructing people?" The Master said, "I only fear that the ācārya will not ask."
