Chan Master Haiyan of Zhengmi Temple on Mount Yunmen in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "What is the matter under the patch-robe?" The Master said, "Like a person biting a hard rock." [The monk] asked, "What is an incense burner in an ancient temple?" The Master said, "Broad and vast, with no one to smell it." [The monk] said, "What about one who smells it?" The Master said, "The six sense organs all do not reach it." [The monk] asked, "I have long yearned for Zhengmi (Rescuing the Deluded); having arrived, why do I not see Zhengmi?" The Master said, "The ācārya does not recognize Zhengmi."
