16.25

潭州寶蓋約禪師。僧問。寶蓋高高掛。其中事若何。請師言下旨。一句不消多。師曰。寶蓋掛空中。有路不曾通。儻求言下旨。便是有西東。

Chan Master Yue of Baogai in Tanzhou. A monk asked:
"The precious canopy hangs high aloft;
What is the matter within it?
We request the Master's purport beneath the words;
One phrase does not need much."
The Master said:
"The precious canopy hangs in empty space;
There is a road that has never been traversed.
If you seek the purport beneath the words,
There is already east and west."
