16.29

潭州中雲蓋和尚。僧問。和尚開堂當為何事。師曰。為汝驢漢。曰諸佛出世當為何事。師曰。為汝驢漢。問祖佛未出世時如何。師曰。像不得。曰出世後如何。師曰。闍梨也須側身始得。問如何是向上一句。師曰。文殊失却口。曰如何是門頭一句。師曰。頭上插華子。問如何是超百億。師曰。超人不得肯。

Upādhyāya Zhongyungai of Tanzhou. A monk asked, "For what purpose does the upādhyāya open the hall?" The Master said, "For you donkey-fellow." [The monk] said, "For what purpose do the buddhas appear in the world?" The Master said, "For you donkey-fellow." [The monk] asked, "How was it before the patriarchs and buddhas appeared in the world?" The Master said, "It cannot be depicted." [The monk] said, "How about after they appeared in the world?" The Master said, "The ācārya must also turn sideways to pass." [The monk] asked, "What is the transcendental phrase?" The Master said, "Mañjuśrī loses his mouth." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase at the gate?" The Master said, "Sticking a flower on the head." [The monk] asked, "What is surpassing a hundred kotis?" The Master said, "One who surpasses people is not approved."
