16.44

嘉州白水寺和尚。僧問。如何是西來意。師曰。四溟無窟宅一滴潤乾坤。問曹溪一路合譚何事。師曰。㵎松千載鶴來聚。月中香桂鳳皇歸。

The Upādhyāya of Baishui Temple in Jiazhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of [the ancestral master's] coming from the West?" The Master said, "The four seas have no cave or dwelling; a single drop moistens heaven and earth." He asked, "What matter should appropriately be discussed on the single path of Caoxi?" The Master said, "In the thousand-year pine by the stream, cranes gather; amidst the fragrant cassia in the moon, the phoenix returns."
