17.18

越州乾峯和尚（或云瑞峯）問僧。什麼處來。曰天台。師曰見說石橋作兩段是否。曰和尚什麼處得遮消息來。師曰。將謂華頂峯前客。元是平田莊裏人。問如何得出三界。師曰。喚院主來趁出遮僧著。師問眾僧。輪迴六趣具什麼眼。眾無對。問如何是超佛越祖之談。師曰。老僧問汝。曰和尚且置。師曰。老僧一問尚自不會問什麼超佛越祖之談。

Upādhyāya Qianfeng of Yuezhou (also called Ruifeng). He asked a monk: 'Where do you come from?' The monk said: 'Tiantai.' The master said: 'I hear it said that the stone bridge has snapped into two pieces; is that so?' The monk said: 'Where did the upādhyāya obtain this news?' The master said: 'I thought you were a guest in front of Huading Peak, but originally you are a person from the Flat Field Estate.' A monk asked: 'How does one escape the three realms?' The master said: 'Call the monastery director to drive this monk out!' The master asked the assembled monks: 'Transmigrating through the six destinies, what eyes does one possess?' The assembly had no answer. A monk asked: 'What is the discourse that surpasses the Buddhas and patriarchs?' The master said: 'This old monk asks you.' The monk said: 'Put that aside for now, upādhyāya.' The master said: 'You do not even understand this old monk's single question; what discourse surpassing the Buddhas and patriarchs are you asking about?'
