17.50

新羅清院和尚。問奔馬爭毬誰是得者。師曰。誰是不得者。曰恁麼即不爭是也。師曰。直得不爭亦有過在。曰如何免得此過。師曰。要且不曾失。曰不失處如何鍛鍊。師曰。兩手捧不起。

Upādhyāya Qingyuan of Silla. A monk asked, "When galloping horses contend for the ball, who is the winner?" The master said, "Who is the one who does not win?" The monk said, "Then not contending is it." The master said, "Even not contending still entails fault." The monk said, "How can one avoid this fault?" The master said, "Above all, it has never been lost." The monk said, "At the place where nothing is lost, how does one temper it?" The master said, "Both hands cannot lift it up."
