Chan Master Ming of Letan in Hongzhou. One day he came down to the guest quarters. The assembly requested the master to return to the abbot's quarters. The master said, "If you can say a word, I will go." At that time Upādhyāya Mou replied, "The great assembly requests the master." The master then ascended the Dharma hall. A monk asked, "What is it like when consciousness and emotion find it hard to fathom that which is beyond thinking?" The master said, "I do not wish to go against the ancients." The monk said, "What is the meaning of not going against the ancients?" The master said, "It is also fitting to receive three prostrations." A monk asked, "The pestle pounding and the mill grinding must not be forgotten—what is the meaning of this?" The master said, "A live sparrow in a tiger's mouth." A monk asked, "What is a person of the Way?" The master said, "Hair disheveled and bristling." The monk said, "What is the house style of a person of the Way?" The master said, "Meeting the Venerable One before the Buddha hall." A monk asked, "What is the upādhyāya's affair throughout the day?" The master said, "No broken chopsticks in the alms bowl." The monk said, "What is a śramaṇa's affair throughout the day?" The master said, "Clattering loudly, borrowing from not a single person among ten thousand."
