17.52

吉州南源山行修號慧觀禪師。亦云光睦和尚。僧問。如何是南源境致。師曰。幾處峯巒猿鳥嘯。一帶平川遊子迷。問如何是南源深深處。師曰。眾人皆見。曰恁麼即淺去也。師曰。也是兩頭遙。

Chan Master Xingxiu of Mount Nanyuan in Jizhou, titled Huiguan; also called Upādhyāya Guangmu. A monk asked, "What is the scenery of Nanyuan?" The master said, "In several places on peaks and ridges, apes and birds cry out; along a single stretch of level plain, the traveler is lost." A monk asked, "What is the profound place of Nanyuan?" The master said, "All people see it." The monk said, "Then it is shallow!" The master said, "The two ends are also far apart."
