19.36

潭州溈山棲禪師。問正恁麼時如何親近。師曰。汝擬作麼生親近。曰豈無方便門。師曰。開元龍興大藏小藏。問如何是速疾神通。師曰。新衣成弊帛。問如何是黃尋橋。師曰。賺却多少人。問不假忉忉如何是和尚家風。師曰。莫作野干聲。

Chan Master Qi of Mount Gui in Tanzhou. [A monk] asked, "Just at such a time, how does one draw near?"
The Master said, "How do you plan to draw near?"
The monk said, "Is there no gate of skillful means?"
The Master said, "The Kaiyuan and Longxing [monasteries], the great canon and the small canon."
[A monk] asked, "What is rapid supernatural penetration?"
The Master said, "New clothes turning into tattered silk."
[A monk] asked, "What is Huangxun Bridge?"
The Master said, "How many people has it cheated!"
[A monk] asked, "Without relying on endless chatter, what is the upādhyāya's house style?"
The Master said, "Do not make the sound of a jackal."
