20.14

洪州大善慧海禪師。問不坐青山時如何。師曰。是什麼人。問如何是解作客底人。師曰不占上。問靈泉忽逢時如何。師曰。從什麼處來。問如何道即不違於師。師曰。莫惜口。曰道後如何。師曰。道什麼。問如何道得相親去。師曰。快道。曰恁麼即不道之。師曰。用口作什麼。師後住百丈而終。

Chan Master Dachan Huihai of Hongzhou was asked: "How is it when one does not sit upon the green mountain?" The Master said: "What person is that?" [A monk] asked: "Who is one who knows how to be a guest?" The Master said: "One who does not take the high seat." [A monk] asked: "How is it when one suddenly encounters the numinous spring?" The Master said: "From where does it come?" [A monk] asked: "How can one speak so as not to go against the Master?" The Master said: "Do not spare your mouth." He said: "After speaking, how is it?" The Master said: "What did you say?" [A monk] asked: "How can one speak so as to attain intimacy?" The Master said: "Speak quickly!" He said: "If so, then I shall not speak of it." The Master said: "What do you use your mouth for?" Later, the Master resided at Baizhang and passed away there.
