20.34

西川布水巖和尚。問如何是西來意。師曰。一迴思著一傷心。問寶劍未磨時如何。師曰。用不得。曰磨後如何。師曰。觸不得。

The Upādhyāya of Bushuiyan in Xichuan. [A monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the [Patriarch's] coming from the West?"
The Master said, "Every time I think of it, my heart breaks."
[A monk] asked, "How is it before the precious sword is polished?"
The Master said, "It cannot be used."
[The monk] asked, "How is it after it is polished?"
The Master said, "It cannot be touched."
