20.35

蜀川西禪和尚。問佛是摩耶降。未審和尚是誰家子。師曰。水上卓紅旗。問三十六路阿那箇一路最妙。師曰。不出第一手。曰忽被出頭時如何。師曰。脊著地也不難。

The Upādhyāya of Xichan in Shuchuan. [A monk] asked, "The Buddha was born of Māyā; I wonder whose son the Upādhyāya is?"
The Master said, "Planting a red flag upon the water."
[A monk] asked, "Among the thirty-six maneuvers, which one is the most wonderful?"
The Master said, "Not bringing forth the primary move."
[The monk] said, "What if it is suddenly brought forth?"
The Master said, "Having one's back hit the ground is not difficult either."
