Chan Master Xian of Shimen Temple on Mount Fenghuang in Xiangzhou was a man of Jingzhao. Having received prediction from Qinglin, he opened the Dharma at two places. Whenever he responded to faculties, he often said, "Fine, fine, elder brother!" At that time he was called "Elder Brother Upādhyāya". At first he lived on Mount Heng, sitting quietly in a rock chamber. When Upādhyāya Jiashan entered extinction, the assembly invited the Master to serve as abbot, so the Master went to Tanzhou. At that time, King Ma of Chu came out of the city to welcome him. The King asked, "What is the Patriarch's great way of coming from the west?" The Master said, "Fine, fine, elder brother! The imperial chariot drawn by six dragons is splendid for a thousand ages; the ranks lined up along the jade steps pass out through the golden gate." The King revered him deeply, inviting him to the Tiancai Mansion to make offerings to him for several days, after which he finally arrived at Jiashan. Taking the seat in the bodhimanda, a monk asked, "How does today's assembly differ from Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa?" The Master said, "In heaven, precious canopies hang down, layered and marvelous; from the earth, golden lotuses gush forth, each petal fresh." The monk said, "I do not know what Dharma you will show to people?" The Master said, "The tune of a stringless zither flows through the sands of world-realms; clear and harmonious, it universally responds to the faculties of the great chiliocosm." A monk asked, "Whose song does the Master sing? Whose tradition of the school do you inherit?" The Master said, "In a tune of gong and shang, look at how the melody is played; to distinguish jewels, one must recognize the blue-eyed barbarian." The monk said, "If so, then a clear stream branches off beneath Dong[shan], and the full moon shines on Qinglin." The Master said, "The explicit intention before the Many Children Pagoda even now conveys its vast sound across generations." The Master moved from Jiashan to Shimen, where he opened the mountain, founded a monastery, and once again propagated the profound wind. Ascending the hall, he instructed the assembly: "The shining sun above the lapis lazuli palace—the sun is without partiality. The glowing peak amidst the seven-treasure mountain—the peak has its evidence. The mud ox walks; the wooden horse neighs. The old rustic sings a ballad; the woodsman dances with fluttering sleeves. On the path of the sun are ancient songs and profound melodies. Meeting under the trees, what else is there?" A monk asked, "What is it like when the moon rises from the clouds?" The Master said, "Three children hold flower drums. Fine, fine, elder brother! Do not come to block the path to my polo gate." The monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Riding a fine horse to dash past high towers; pointing the iron whip to cover the barbarian's road." The monk asked, "What is the environment of Shimen?" The Master said, "Gold throughout the realm, without a different hue; travelers coming and going cease their searching." The monk said, "What about the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Formless, not dwelling in the ranks of the mundane or sacred; walking the bird's path, leaving no trace." A monk asked, "When many hands pan for gold, who obtains it?" The Master said, "Zhang the Third and Li the Fourth step out of the golden gate; holding heaven and earth all around, the stone man is present." The monk said, "If so, then it is not obtained from someone else." The Master said, "The three dukes and nine ministers are lined up in rank; look to see whether the golden rooster stands up or not." A monk asked, "What is it like when the realm of the Way is boundless and the entire body is devoid of any spot or stain?" The Master said, "Vast white clouds cover the snow peak; turn your body on the profound path, do not delay." The monk said, "I do not know where the path of turning the body is?" The Master said, "The stone man raises his hand and remembers clearly; watch when the ten-thousand-year-old dried bones smile." The monk asked, "What is it like when one is such, such, and unmoving?" The Master said, "What end-day is there?" The monk said, "What would be right?" The Master said, "The stone door is not locked." The monk asked, "What is the environment of Shimen?" The Master said, "Crows and kites fly and caw incessantly." The monk said, "What about the person within the environment?" The Master said, "The wind shoots through the old curtain-windows." Because Prajñā Monastery was burned down, someone asked, "Since it is Prajñā, why was it burned by fire?" The Master said, "For ten thousand li, a single strip of iron."
