Upādhyāya Guangde of Mount Wantong in Xiangzhou (first generation residing there). A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Before the mountain, people do not stay; behind the mountain, it is even more boundless." The monk asked, "What is the phrase that penetrates the Dharmakāya?" The Master said, "Having no strength to climb the mountains and waters; at the thatched hut, an utter lack of one who knows the tune." The monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Just when one laments the yellow leaves falling, one sees again the willow twigs turning green." The monk asked, "The entire great earth is a single corpse. Where should it be buried?" The Master said, "Beneath Mount Beimang, thousands of mounds, myriads of mounds." Because the Master was indisposed, a monk asked, "Upādhyāya, what are you suffering from that has made you so terribly emaciated?" The Master said, "Without thought, not falling into targets." The monk said, "If so, then I know the source of the Upādhyāya's illness." The Master said, "What do you say this old monk is suffering from?" The monk said, "It would be best if the Upādhyāya abstains from food." The Master thereupon struck him.
