隋州隋城山護國院守澄淨果大師。問如何是佛師曰。遮驢漢問盡大地是一隻眼底人來師如何。師曰。堦下漢。問諸佛不倒處什麼人履踐。師曰。聃耳鬅頭。曰何人通得彼中信。師曰。驢面獸顋。問隨緣認得時如何。師曰錯。問如何是西來意。師曰。一人傳虛萬人傳實。問不落于將手如何是太阿。師曰。七星光采耀六國罷煙塵。

Great Master Jingguo Shoucheng of Huguo Monastery on Mount Suicheng in Suizhou. A monk asked: 'What is the Buddha?' The Master said: 'This donkey-fellow.' The monk asked: 'What about when a person whose entire earth is a single eye comes to the Master?' The Master said: 'The fellow beneath the steps.' The monk asked: 'What kind of person treads the place where the Buddhas do not fall?' The Master said: 'Long-lobed ears, disheveled hair.' The monk asked: 'Who can convey news of that place?' The Master said: 'Donkey face, beast cheeks.' The monk asked: 'What about when recognizing it in accord with conditions?' The Master said: 'Wrong.' The monk asked: 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said: 'One person transmits a falsehood, ten thousand transmit it as fact.' The monk asked: 'Not falling into a general's hands, what is Tai'e?' The Master said: 'The seven stars' luster shines; the six states end smoke and dust.'
