洛京長水靈泉歸仁禪師。問如何是祖師意。師曰。仰面獨揚眉迴頭自拍手。問如何是祖師西來的的意。師曰。洛河水逆流。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。騎牛戴席帽過水著靴衫。

Chan Master Guiren of Lingquan in Changshui, the capital Luoyang. A monk asked: 'What is the Patriarch's meaning?' The Master said: 'Facing upward, raising an eyebrow alone; turning the head, clapping one's hands oneself.' The monk asked: 'What is the exact meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said: 'The waters of the Luo River flow backward.' The monk asked: 'What is the Master's house style?' The Master said: 'Riding an ox wearing a rush-mat hat; crossing water wearing boots and robes.'
