20.71

常州正勤院蘊禪師（第一世住）魏府人也。姓韓氏。幼而出家老有童顏。得法於疎山之室。僧問師唱誰家曲宗風事若何。師曰。適然簫韶外六律不能過。曰不過底事作麼生。師曰。聲前拍不散句後覓無蹤。僧問。如何是正勤一條路。師曰。埿深三尺。曰如何得到。師曰。闍梨從什麼處來。問如何是。禪師曰。石裏蓮華火裏泉。曰如何是道。師曰。楞伽峯頂一莖草。曰禪道相去多少。師曰。泥人落水木人撈。師晉天福中將順寂。預告大眾。及期闔城士女奔走至院。師囑付訖。怡然坐化。門人葬于院後。經二稔發塔覩全身。儼然髮爪俱長。乃於城東闍維。收舍利真骨重建塔。

Chan Master Yun of Zhengqin Monastery in Changzhou (the first generation abbot) was a native of Weifu. His surname was Han. He left home in his youth, and in old age retained the face of a youth. He attained the Dharma in the chamber of Shushan. A monk asked, "Whose song does the master sing? What is the matter of the tradition of the school?" The Master said, "Spontaneously beyond the music of Shun; the six pitch-pipes cannot surpass it." The monk asked, "What is the matter of not surpassing?" The Master said, "Before the sound, the rhythm is not dispersed; after the phrase, seeking it leaves no trace." A monk asked, "What is the single road of Zhengqin?" The Master said, "The mud is three feet deep." The monk asked, "How does one arrive there?" The Master said, "Where did the ācārya come from?" A monk asked, "What is Chan?" The Master said, "A lotus in the rock, a spring within the fire." The monk asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "A stalk of grass on the peak of Laṅkā." The monk asked, "How far apart are Chan and the Way?" The Master said, "A mud man falls into the water; a wooden man fishes him out." During the Tianfu era of the Jin dynasty, the Master was about to pass away peacefully. He announced it to the assembly in advance. When the time arrived, men and women from throughout the city hurried to the monastery. Having given his final instructions, the Master peacefully sat and passed away. His disciples buried him behind the monastery. After two years, they opened the stupa and beheld his whole body, majestic, with hair and nails both grown long. They then cremated him to the east of the city, collected his relics and true bones, and rebuilt the stupa.
