20.79

嘉州洞谿和尚初問樂普。月樹無根枝覆蔭。請師直指妙幽微。樂普曰。森羅秀處事不相依。淥水千波孤峯自異。師於是領旨承嗣。問蛇師為什麼被蛇吞。師曰。幾度扣門拈不出。

Upādhyāya Dongxi of Jiazhou initially asked Lepu, "The moon-tree has no roots, yet its branches provide shade. Please, Master, point directly to the subtle and profound." Lepu said, "Where the myriad forms flourish, things do not depend on each other; among the thousand waves of clear water, the solitary peak is distinct on its own." The Master thereupon grasped the purport and succeeded to his lineage. A monk asked, "Why was the snake master swallowed by a snake?" The Master said, "Several times knocking at the gate, it was not brought forth."
