Chan Master Zhaozong Yuanzhi of Kaixian Monastery on Mount Lu was a native of Gusu. By nature he was plain and rustic, not consorting with the common herd. In his youth he went to Liushui Monastery in his home prefecture, left home, and received the full precepts. He entered the room of Changqing and secretly tallied with the true essentials. At first he built a hermitage on Mount Liao in Qianzhou, and for twenty years the fame of his Way spread far and wide. The Ruler of the Southern Tang, of the Li family, built a monastery and invited him to turn the wheel of the Dharma. Black-robed disciples converged like spokes at a hub. When the Ruler toured Hongjing, he went in person into the mountain to pay respects and requested the Master to ascend the hall. He had a monk come forward and ask, "What is the realm of Kaixian?" The Master said, "Best of all is a single thread cutting through the color of the blue mountain." The monk said, "What about the person within the realm?" The Master said, "Gathering dry firewood to boil water for washing clothes." The Ruler respected him all the more. Later he passed away at the mountain monastery, and his stupa remains there.
