Master Baozi Xiaowu of the Jinlin Bao'en Cloister in Wuzhou ascended the hall. The great assembly stood for a long time. The Master said, "Brothers, each of you has come to the mountain gate. The host's mouth is like a carrying pole; let us not cross each other or fall short. Do not stay long in the assembly. Brothers, do not take offense. If you have the eye of study, why bother standing for long? Each of you return to the hall. Take care." The Master laid out the foundation for the abbot's quarters. A monk asked, "Now that the foundation for the quarters is completed, what message will you send?" The Master said, "One cannot obscure this question of yours, brother." The monk said, "What is the matter that is not obscured?" The Master said, "Blue sky, bright sun." A monk asked, "This student is a beginner; please, Master, show me an entry path." The Master then tilted his palm to show him and said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "A single palm does not sound in vain." A monk asked, "What is the house style of Bao'en?" The Master said, "I know that the ācārya has not been in the assembly for long." A monk asked, "What was the ancients' intention in picking up the gavel and raising the whisk?" The Master said, "Bao'en has a share in cutting off tongues." The monk said, "Why is it like this?" The Master said, "Why wrong it?" A monk asked, "What is Mañjuśrī's sword?" The Master said, "I do not know." The monk said, "What about a person who is brought to life under a single sword?" The Master said, "This mountain monk only attends to the two daily meals of porridge and rice." A monk asked, "What is bodhi right before the eyes?" The Master said, "What is standing behind your back?" The monk said, "This student does not understand; I beg the Master to show me again." The Master raised his staff and said, "Since you do not understand, how many blows of the staff do you deserve?" A monk asked, "What is a person of great shame?" The Master said, "Opening the mouth, one cannot find agreement." The monk said, "How does such a person conduct himself?" The Master said, "Meeting tea, it is tea; encountering rice, it is rice." A monk asked, "What is the single arrow of the vajra?" The Master said, "What did you say?" The monk asked again. The Master said, "It has gone past the kingdom of Silla." A monk asked, "'Waves surging and cauldrons boiling, when they arise it must be entirely real.' I wonder, what was the ancient's meaning?" The Master then shouted at him. The monk said, "Then this is out of order." The Master said, "Your words have fallen into error." He also said, "My words have also fallen into error; what about you?" The monk had no answer. A monk asked, "Setting aside reward and punishment, what is the hair-blowing sword?" The Master said, "Yanping belongs to Jianzhou." The monk said, "In that case, one loses one's body and forfeits one's life." The Master said, "The tide in the Qiantang River."
