21.29

福州水陸院洪儼禪師。上堂大眾集定。師下座捧香鑪巡行大眾前曰。供養十方諸佛便歸方丈。僧問。離却百非兼四句。請師盡力為提綱。師曰。落在什麼處。僧曰。恁麼即人天有賴。師曰。莫將惡水澆潑人好。

Chan Master Hongyan of the Shuilu Cloister in Fuzhou ascended the hall. When the great assembly was settled, the Master stepped down from the seat, held an incense burner, walked around in front of the assembly, and said, "An offering to the Buddhas of the ten directions," and then returned to the abbot's quarters. A monk asked, "Leaving behind the hundred negations along with the four propositions, please, Master, do your utmost to uphold the essential guideline." The Master said, "Where does it fall?" The monk said, "In that case, gods and humans have something to rely on." The Master said, "It is better not to pour foul water over people."
