21.32

福州怡山長慶常慧禪師。僧問。王侯請命法嗣怡山鎖口之言請師不謬。師曰得。僧曰。恁麼即深領尊慈。師曰。好與莫鈍置人。問不犯宗風不傷物議請師滿口道。師曰。今日豈不是開堂。問焰續雪峯印傳超覺。不違於物不負於人。不在當頭即今何道。師曰。違負即道。僧曰。恁麼即善副來言淺深已辨。師曰。也須識好惡。

Chan Master Changhui of Mount Yi and Changqing in Fuzhou was asked by a monk, "Princes and marquises have requested your command, inheriting the Dharma of Mount Yi; concerning words of a locked mouth, please, Master, make no mistake." The Master said, "Granted." The monk said, "In that case, I deeply receive your kindness." The Master said, "It is well given; do not bungle people." A monk asked, "Neither violating the tradition of the school nor damaging public opinion, please, Master, speak with a full mouth." The Master said, "Is today not the opening of the hall?" A monk asked, "The flame continues Xuefeng, the seal is transmitted from Chaojue; neither defying phenomena nor failing people, when not facing it directly, what do you say right now?" The Master said, "If there is defying and failing, then speak." The monk said, "In that case, you have responded well to the incoming words, and shallow and deep have been distinguished." The Master said, "You must also know good from bad."
