21.33

福州石佛院靜禪師上堂曰。若道素面相呈猶添脂紛。縱離添過猶有負愆。諸人且作麼生體悉。僧問。學人欲見和尚本來師時如何。師曰。洞上有言親體取。僧曰。恁麼即不得見去也。師曰。灼然客路如天遠侯門似海深。

Chan Master Jing of Shifo Cloister in Fuzhou ascended the hall and said, "If one speaks of presenting a plain face to each other, it is still adding powder and rouge. Even if one is free from the error of adding, there is still the fault of failing. How do you all understand this?" A monk asked, "When this student wishes to see the upādhyāya's original master, how is it?" The Master said, "On the Dong [stream] there are words; experience them directly for yourself." The monk said, "In that case, one will not get to see him." The Master said, "Indeed, the traveler's road is as distant as heaven, and the nobleman's gate is as deep as the sea."
