21.37

福州長慶院弘辯妙果大師一日上堂。於座側立云大眾各歸堂得也未。還會得麼。若也未會得。山僧謾諸人去也。遂乃升座。僧問。海眾雲臻請師開方便門示真實相。師曰。遮箇是方便門。僧曰。恁麼即大眾側聆去也。師曰。空側聆作麼。問超覺後焰妙果傳燈去却語默動靜如何相示。師曰。還解怪得麼。

Great Master Hongbian Miaoguo of Changqing Monastery in Fuzhou one day entered the hall. Standing beside the seat, he said, "Has the great assembly returned to the hall yet? Do you understand? If you do not yet understand, this mountain monk will deceive you all." He then ascended the seat. A monk asked, "The ocean-like assembly gathers like clouds; we ask the master to open the gate of skillful means and reveal the true mark." The master said, "This is the gate of skillful means." The monk said, "In that case, the great assembly will listen attentively with tilted ears." The master said, "Why tilt your ears in vain?" [A monk] asked, "Surpassing enlightenment, the flame continues, Miaoguo transmits the lamp; leaving behind speech and silence, motion and stillness, how will you demonstrate it?" The master said, "Can you still manage to take offense?"
