Zen Master Shouping of Xianzong Monastery in Fuzhou one day did not enter the hall. The great assembly entered the abbot's quarters to consult him. The master said, "Tonight I ask for leave together with the great assembly. I wonder, is leave granted or not? If we have not yet heard that leave is granted, the first to speak loses. Take care." A monk asked, "Can a person who is constantly present throughout the twelve periods of the day digest the offerings of humans and devas?" The master said, "He cannot digest them." The monk said, "Why can he not digest them?" The master said, "Because you are constantly present." The monk said, "What about a person who is constantly absent—can he digest them?" The master said, "Wait until the Year of the Donkey." A monk asked, "Please answer the dialogue on 'no host and guest'." The master said, "Bring your question forward to the place where there is neither host nor guest."
